Disappointing when first opened but it improved over quite a few hours and gradually become the wine I expected it to be. It showed the same slow transformation over a few hours (and days) as I recorded for the 2014 vintage. It really takes time after opening to become a fine wine showing classic Penfolds quality. Given time, the fruit (and spice) opens beautifully. It retains all the Shiraz character at first but, if you let it, the Cabernet character gradually emerges, to become part of the total - ‘sweet’ dark fruit, balanced soft tannin and acidity, gentle vanilla from the oak. Give it 24+ hours and it becomes a much classier act than you could hope for at the modest price. It was even better on day 3 after opening. Eight years old and it still has years ahead of it. Just don’t expect to open the bottle and get the best out of it immediately. If you ‘pop and pour’ it you are wasting your money in my opinion. 89+

Deep dark purple, dark berries on the nose and palate, some pencilly/graphite flavours. Chalky, quite fine tannins. Finish is medium length and a little sour at the end as others have noted. Still, for the cost, and with a few years in the cellar, this is great drinking and suggest it could go a little further.

Wow, what a pleasure. Time in the cellar has produced rewards. Has some legs to go further.
