  • Opaque pitch-black red with a cherry hue. Aromatic, dark-toned and surprisingly characterful nose with aromas of fresh figs, vanilla, plummy fruit, a little bit of chocolatey oak, a hint of raspberry jam and a touch of leather. Although the oak seems to be quite a bit to the fore, there is surprisingly much complexity to the aromas. The wine is full-bodied and ripe, yet still it is more savory than sweet on the palate with flavors of ripe blackcurrant, milk chocolate, savory exotic spices, some fresh plums, a little bit of vanilla and a hint of herbal bitterness. The tannins are pretty mellow and the acidity is medium, but they both contribute to some structure enough to keep the wine somewhat balanced. The finish is sweeter than the midpalate with long flavors of oaky chocolate, dried aromatic herbs, some plum jam, a little bit of tannic grip, a hint of maraschino cherry and a touch of ripe and juicy blackberry.

Contrary to the normal Tarapacá style, which I find pretty repulsive and undrinkable, this was a surprisingly good and well-made effort with surprisingly much character and complexity with some sense of balance. Of course, true to the usual Tarapacá style, the wine is pretty heavily oaked with too little tannins and too low acidity to balance out the big fruit, yet both of them seem more in balance here than practically in any other Tarapacá wine. This is still not my cup of tea, far from it, but much better than any other wine by this winery. Perhaps we're getting closer?
