  • 14.1% alcohol. napa valley.

despite the prowess of his reputation, the melka label wines seem to fly awfully low to the ground, and i'm not certain why. this is the second wine to the metisse, named after his two children. at age 10, it remains more angular and tannic than i had hoped. it has a nice core of cassis fruit, and a smell of cedar + oak, but ultimately is too drying on the finish. it's never going to fully integrate so drink up.

  • ($40) Must be Cabernet Sauvignon mostly. I'm guessing well over 90%. Opaque maroon. Nose of black currants almost to the exclusion of all else. Maybe some toasty cedar, but not much oak shows. Good concentration, sweet fruit, but shows some restraint. Good length, the tannins build with aeration. Nice wine. We overpaid some, but there wasn't much to go around in Dallas. Made by Philippe Melka, Seavey's winemaker.

  • ($40) Delicious concentration of black currant fruit. Something of a fruit bomb
