  • Fabulous shiraz, still going strong! Our only bottle, bought on release. Still dark, only slight translucency, no brown edges. Intense aroma immediately, sweet dark fruits, a style much more like Grange than like Mollydooker. Flavors full-bodied but also round and smooth, tannins completely resolved. The sweet dark fruits, like plums, predominate. Nice long aftertaste. Wish I had more! Our 15-20 year old top flight Aussies are still going strong.

  • A decent example of a Barossa Valley Shiraz from the heydays of the mid-2000s. The nose showed typical notes of sweet blueberries, plums and blackberries, then meat, earth and bramble, along with a brush of eucalyptus and a bit of that crushed ant, formic acid smell that one gets in mature Aussie Shiraz. The palate felt just in the cusp of a mature phase - still showing some fresh, primary plum and blackberry fruit, but also starting to display secondary flavours of dried earth, mineral, spice and bramble, leading into a finish laced with roast meat and dried fruit notes. The nose felt a bit more developed than the palate, and there was still a dusting of tannins haunting the finish, but this is starting to drink nicely, and should be starting to show really well over the next few years. The only thing that put me off a little was a slight lack of acidity on the backpalate, which led to the finish feeling a bit short. Otherwise, pretty nice.

  • I opened this at our 2/7/15 Australian Rhone tasting. It had a deep, rich, thick and somewhat brooding bouquet of plum, blackberry, tar, violet, licorice, cinnamon, pepper and spice aromas. The palate was dense, rich and dry with flavors of plum, blueberry, licorice, cinnamon, pepper and spice. Our group’s average score was 90.4 points

  • WoW! Wonderful Rhone like funk with blueberries, truffles, dark chocolate, minerals and mushrooms. This is an amazing, complex wine with a LONG finish. A top ten effort for the year and this on day 2 is a rock star. I will save some for day 3. Still drinking well on day 3 and this wine should age five to ten more years but honestly why wait.

  • 18th Annual Lyon 10 Year Retrospective (Lyon Down Inn): In the top 5 out of 40 wines, this impresses with its nose, its velvety texture, and its long balanced finish - less heat than other Aussies tonight. Flavors of black- and boysenberry, spices, some oak, and a floral hit. 94 on day 2.
