Interesting and complex GG (Grosses Gewächs)! Appearance: Gorgeous Gold. Slightly viscous while swirling in the glass. The nose is quite funky initially, like walking near a volcano. This transitions to heavy petrol presence with florals and tropical fruit in the background; hint of overripe bananas. The palate: savory overtones over a foundation of lime, ruby red grapefruit and sour apple. Slight effervescence; light to medium body, good density of flavors. Medium force finish, which is lengthy due to its spicy and mineral heavy trail. I can see how this wine could be really polarizing: some people will love this and some will hate it. Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me to see high scores because of quality, complexity and flavor strength, but on the flip-side, low scores for being a little vexatious. Paired nicely with smoked pork babyback ribs and a salad of zucchini and cucumber vinaigrette with herbs and peppermint. *Official VDP producer; Uhlen Roth Lay vineyard in the northern edge of the Terrassenmosel classified as top tier "Grosse Lage". *60+ y.o. avg. age of root-true (ungrafted) vines. *14th generation wine growers since 1520!
Simply wow! I have written about 1300 tasting notes on CT and never ranked a wine as high as 96p before.
There is so much going on with the Winningen Uhlen R GG that it is impossible to describe all the complex, interwoven and utterly delicious characteristics of this wine. To keep it short: highly mineralic (R stands for Roth Lay), little RS (1.8 g/L vs 6.1 g/L TA), some petrol, mouth watering juicyness, salt, peach, melon, herbs, tobacco, and a very long finish.
I am really lucky to have been able to taste such a brilliant wine and to have a second bottle sitting in my cellar!

Absolutely stunning. Great combination of fruit, rocks and zip. Warm yet balanced. Drinking beautifully. Long. Memorable. (96)
