Take this note with a grain of salt, as the bottle had traveled by plane just 5 days before. The nose was appropriate for a St Joseph, with dark fruit and irony minerality, but the expression was muddled and indistinct. The palate was not as young as I would have expected, with a fairly soft and friendly fruit expression and only moderate tannin. I am inclined to chalk up the lack of focus to some travel shock and will try to make a point of opening another bottle soon to get a better read on its development.

Brunch at Eric and Megan's (Chicago, IL): Ridiculously young. Inky black when I poured it into my glass. Peppers and a bit of smoke at first, as well as a very big dose of black fruit. The palate, despite all the fruit, has good cut and precision, and the acidity here really helps with the fruit. Very good, just needs a good amount of time.

4th Saturday Group: Anything but Domestic (Rich & Dana's): Blind. Inky dark color. Aromas of incense, dark fruit and pepper. Full-bodied and well-balanced, showing pepper and black fruit on the palate and lingering finish. Develops a subtle meaty note with air. Long finish. Easy to pick out as our St. Joseph, though I expected it to be in one of the later flights.

Soft tannin, fruit, little spice. Pinot like.
