  • While clearly not the wine it once was, this wine showed a tightness that I never would have expected at this age. The color was a rich purple not hint of brown edges at all. Nose was slightly muted, but far from a bad nose. Showed some fruit in the nose. A total hit of wood in your mouth as you get through the first taste of the wine doesn't overwhelm, but it is far from subtle. It is amazing to JFK and I that this wine is so drinkable. Dark red cherry, followed by reaspberry in wood. Lacks the Turley oomph onthe end, and this is due to ,I am sure, the idea that thiswine is over the hill, but a good wine for spicy tacos. CT says I paid $27 for it back in 1997, ah, memories.....

  • Seems on the decline. A bit of tomato stew on the nose. Too much overt alcohol, not enough fruit. However, G. prefers this to the 2000 Turley Hayne also opened this evening. She finds it "more mellow". To me, it lacks Zin fruit character, though it does gain some after an hour. 87 pts on opening, 89 pts an hour later.

  • Beautiful wine. Color was brick red, beginning to show signs of age. Nose was sweet cherries and exotic spice. Finish was long and sweet. This wine is at it's peak now, but still wonderful and a sure sign that these Turley Zins age very well and even gain in complexity. Only negative was some murkiness.

  • Weekend in Connecticut with Mikhail and Svetlana; 4/13/2006-4/16/2006 (Sharon, CT): Deep ruby color, almost black centered, with a tawny rim. We decanted this for about a half an hour before drinking. On open, it was a bit reticent in the nose, but kept opening up with more time. Even after a couple of hours of air this still was opening and evolving in the glass: clearly it had more life in front of it. Began with notes of spicebox and red fruits; the spice had a dusty edge to it. Also notes of smoke. With more time, the nose took on more of a sweet tobacco character, with elements of Bordeaux after about an hour and a half of air. By the two-hour point the fruit was more like ripe plum on the nose. On the palate: absolutely silky smooth with a huge flavor of pepper spice; full body, strong acid grip, fully resolved tannins. Huge concentration and savory density. One remarkable thing is that even with the very high alcohol (over 16%) it was not detectable on the nose until the very end, and even then only barely. And it was not hot on the palate at all. Exceptional stuff!
