  The ‘Zarihs 2013’ is the first version of a new Campo de Borja wine (55.000 bottles produced), a joint initiative between the renowned Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and the local oenologist José Luis Chueca. A 100 percent Syrah wine (‘Zarihs’ is a reverse reference to ‘Shiraz’), made from vines planted 15 years ago on the slopes of the Moncayo mountain massif (600-700 meters above sea level). Maturation: half of the wine was aged in new American oak barriques for 12 months, the other half in steel tanks. Decanted: two hours before tasting. Color: opaque black-red colored wine with a purple rim. Nose: expressive bouquet of blackberries, sweet herbs, smoke and vanilla. On the palate: a rich, opulent wine, made in Barossa style, with abundant plum and berry fruit, a silky texture and quite smooth tannins, but the oak influence is too dominant for my liking. Round aftertaste. Perhaps was I drinking the wine too early, it could improve with a few more years of age.

Een 100 percent Syrah-wijn ('Zarihs' is een omgekeerde verwijzing naar 'Shiraz'), gemaakt van wijnstokken die15 jaar geleden werden geplant op de hellingen van het Moncayo-massief (600-700 meter boven de zeespiegel). Rijping: de helft van de wijn verbleef 12 maanden in nieuwe Amerikaanse barriques, de andere helft rijpte op roestvrij staal. Gedecanteerd: twee uur vóór consumptie. Kleur: zeer dicht zwartrood van kleur met wat paarse schakeringen aan de rand. Neus: expressief bouquet van bramen, zachte kruiden, rokerige tonen en vanille. In de mond: een rijke, weelderige wijn – gemaakt in Barossa stijl – met overvloedig pruim- en bessenfruit, een fluwelige textuur en vrij milde tannines, doch de houttoets is te dominant voor mijn smaak. Ronde afdronk. De wijn is nog zeer jong en heeft mogelijks nog wat ontwikkelingspotentieel.
