  • Extra Brut: dosage 3 g/l. Served blind.

Pale, almost watery yellow color. Quite rich and expressive nose with aromas of cream and vanilla, some overripe apple, a little bit of yeasty leesiness, a hint of autolytic brioche and a touch of sweet smoke. The wine is bone-dry and somewhat bitter on the palate with bright, incisive flavors of creaminess, crème à la vanille, some steely minerality, a little bit of bitter apple peel, a hint of white fruit and a touch of lemony citrus fruits. The wine is quite light-bodied, crisp and rather acid-driven, yet there is some nice sense of weight and suppleness. The mousse is very small, gentle and sophisticated with moderate persistence. The finish is quite long and steely with bright, piercing flavors of steely minerality, tart green apples and some lemony citrus fruits along with some notes of apple peel bitterness, a little bit of creamy leesiness and a light sourmilk note of MLF.

Normally I favor rich, brooding and toasty Champagnes over the lighter, more poised and mineral wines, but this wine here is a very charming and convinging example of the latter category. There is some sense of power and toasty autolysis, but the emphasis here is on the light, sleek body, minerality and laser-like precision. The wine is still very youthful, so aroma- and flavor-wise it is not yet particularly characterful and memorable yet - and the MLF notes still show a little in the aftertaste - but it shows terrific cellaring potential with its impeccable balance between the structure, the body and the fruit. In a nutshell, this is a lovely Pinot Meunier that will need a few years more before it starts to sing - now the wine is still a little bit anonymous, although still very lovely. No need to pop open anytime soon. Recommended.
