  • Not your average Malbec! From the ancestral home of the varietal, where it’s known as Côt, this wine veers far off from what you might get out of Argentina (or, more appropriately, what you get out of Argentina veers far off from what this grape will do in the hands of a great producer in its true homeland!). Rather than bold and full, it was remarkably fresh and all too drinkable. The fruit, consisting primarily of berries, cherries, and plum, came across as light and authentic, instead of heavy and extracted. Hints of currants added some savouriness to the fruit. And speaking of savoury notes, there were plenty of those as well: pepper, forest floor, stone, and a touch of minerality. Tannins were apparent, but not out of place; the rest of the structure was moderate and every sip was a pleasure, particularly with the wine sitting at only 13.0%. I didn’t find the nose or palate particularly expressive or complex, which lost it a few points – but all in all this was a tasty bottle to try out. I’d certainly recommend this as a change of pace from what most people know about Malbec.
