Big surprise to me that this overlooked bottle was still almost as good as my last bottle 9-10 years ago. Nice bouquet with cassis and cedar with silky tannins and complex middle with more dark fruits, cedar, tobacco and a little leather. The finish lingered for a few minutes. I opened this for a Zoom tasting with a backup available but the wine was interesting enough to keep me engaged for the whole tasting. Based on this bottle I am looking for more recent vintages.

Very dark purple red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes plus. This had a wonderful earthy mushroomy nose with tobacco leaf, cedarbox, dried herbs, and black fruits. The palate is earthy, dry forest floor, mushroom, deep and savory, dried herbs, cassis, plum, blackberry, very fine grained elegant tannins, cedar and nice finish. What great bottle to end on. This was much better than a bottle a year ago and seemed to be at peak. 91+pts. Great QPR!

Still showing some its licorice, black cherry, coffee bean and earthy personality, this wine has lost some of its vibrancy and juicy fruits with time. However, the round textures are still present in the finish.

(Ch. Goulee) 2003 Medoc Bargain Dear Friends, ...and now the other side of the River Gironde. The center of quality with 2003 Bordeaux was a slice of land that began in the northern Medoc and made its way south into Margaux. Chateau Goulee, in the far northern Medoc, is a property I had to see for myself before believing the incredible level of insider-banter surrounding it. As far as Bordeaux goes (which can be staid and stuck in its ways) this is downright hip. In 2003, Goulee was the beneficiary of the weather and conditions that favored Montrose, Calon-Segur and its sister property, Cos d’Estournel. If anyone needs further evidence as to the effect Jean Guillaume Prats has had on the Cos d’Estournel family (of which Goulee was a proud new member with the 2003 vintage), just open a bottle of this wine, which is more a precursor of things to come than downright great on its own. From some of Bordeaux’s most northerly and unique vines, basically within the mouth of the Gironde, the cooling influence of the Atlantic could be too much in a typical vintage but in 2003 (and again in 2005) - watch out. If the trend is toward vintages more in line with 2003 or 2005 rather than 1994 or 1988, then this property may one day produce the Medoc’s most individual wine. From Prats: “The vines of Goulee, located north of the Medoc at Port de Goulee and jau-dignac et loirac, spread out on a gravely hill facing the Gironde estuary. Goulee, which was once an island surrounded by the waters of the estuary, enjoys a terroir of deep layers of gravel worthy of the greatest Medoc Grands Crus and thus vinified as such by the team of Cos d’Estournel. The average plantation density of 5700 vines per hectare goes along with a high trellising to allow a perfect photosynthesis. Just like for all the great terroir of the Medoc, the vines are pruned and harvested by hand. The vineyard of Goulee benefits from an extraordinary temperate climate where the two grape-varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) and Merlot (20%) can grow in the best conditions. Indeed, the geographical position of Goulee situated close to the Atlantic Ocean (11 miles away and 19 from Pauillac), together with the Estuary’s remarkable width at Goulee (7 ? miles wide as against only 2 at Pauillac) bring the Goulée vines exceptional coolness in summer and greater mildness in winter and spring.” ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price directly from the winery cellar: 2003 Chateau Goulee (Medoc) (IWC87-90) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord8940

Definitely on the downslope. Showing a bit of a pruney character which I never picked up in this wine before.
