Opened 2 hours but needed decanting. Faint initial whiff of being corked but that dissipated over the evenin. Tanins also softened nicely. Pkeasing quaffer but not worthy of an occassion

2015 Montirius Gigondas Confidentiel had great purity of fruits and expressive aromatics. The developing Gigondas was clear and medium ruby in colour with traces of fine sediments. Freshly uncorked, aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, violet and lavender jumped out of the glass. With a couple of hours of in-bottle aeration, it gained subtitles of farmyard and orange zest.
On the palate, it was dry and rather full-bodied, with medium levels of balancing acidity and grainy tannin. There were flavours of bramble, earth, Provençal herbs and wet stone minerals in a medium gently spiced finish. The 14.5% alcohol was well-concealed. The wine was certified organic and biodynamic. I adore the depth and the purity of fruits, as well as the way it achieves complexities without the use of oak.
According to the winery website, the blend was composed of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre. The age of the vines was on average 75 years old. The wine was aged in cement vats for two winters. As few as 4,000 bottles were produced. The vignerons explained that this cuvée was a gift of nature. The vines were situated at the corner of a larger family-owned parcel, with the same soil composition, exposition, vine varieties and age of vines. They discovered during the pre-blending tasting that one particular vat had greater fullness and harmony than the other vats. They experimented blending this vat with the rest, but it did not produce a desirable outcome. The vignerons developed confidence in this particular plot, and bottled the wine under the special label `Confidentiel'.
