  • I was able to visit Calais Winery almost a year ago during my hill country winery visit. In my opinion, Calais is putting out the most impressive and most consistent rosés and red wines in the state of TX. If you want to get in to TX wines, I’d suggest Calais, Kuhlman and CL Butaud.

I had a bottle of this during the trip and took another home to see how it changed.

Though not overly different than how it tasted last year, the fruit, which was watermelon and kiwi dominant, has faded in to more of a strawberry and mango-purée medley. Still retaining nice acidity, but more smooth from start to finish. The nose even has acquired a new leather note.

  • This wine is finding its stride now. Wow oh wow is this a good Rose. Has lost some of that watermelon tart that it used to have. This one now trends to more of a raspberry and strawberry. Thicker, a little more dense and concentrated. More structure. The finish of this wine is LENGTHY. It paired extremely well with a ham and broccoli quiche and salad. A perfect Rose for the summertime. The only question is: Usually on the 4th of July, I choose to drink beer. Is this finally going to be the one wine that was good enough to replace the beer? I used to think that this wine would live young to die young, but I think this Rose is made for a couple of years of aging, and I would love to see what complexities come out in the next 1-2 years.

  • Whereas 2015 is definitely more strawberry crush and red fruited in general, this 2016 is more watermelon, pink grapefruit and mango on the front. The wine is very acidic on the front. The wine is of medium weight with sharp acid. There is a little less fruit here than the 2015 overall. The wine is still rather solid to the finish with the watermelon and mango notes, some kiwi here as well. I think this has very good aging potential. I think the 2016 Rose wines from the TX Hill Country are all less strawberry on a whole. But all, with exception to one this far, pretty damn delicious.
