This is just black magic; day 1 was pure tar on the nose, a deep backbone of black fruit; day 2 this is a poised monstrous masterpiece; the tar still echoes on the nose, dark cassis and a hint of scorch, a touch of spice; this really is spectacular. Given the day it took to rattle out of its cage, let it sit or give it a vigorous decant. My favorite Syrah to date. 99, likely perfect in a few years.

Thick and dark inky purple appearance. Nose of alcohol. Syrupy. Christmas spices. Numbing. Chinese five spice. Blackberry Farm duck. Big vanilla extract finish. Tannins. Still some bitterness on the end that needs to diminish. Dry. Chalk. Umami. Boysenberry. Raspberry. Cough syrup. Cardamom. Garden hose. Minerality. Metallic. Peppercorn. Bitter chocolate. This wine is just a little too bitter for me, in particular the bitter vanilla extract finish.

Candied fruits and nuts on the nose. Boysenberry. Blackberry. Menthol. Syrupy. Similar to Wagner. Vanilla. Caramel. Meat, salt, and umami on the finish. Lush. Jammy. Fleshy.

I won't rate this wine numerically because it had been open for a while: my visit was on Monday and they pulled the cork on Saturday morning. A rather heavy texture for Syrah, thick, with a nose of ripe blackberries and plums, significant vanilla and coffee, leather. That same very oaky impression carries over to the palate, which sets the sweet, ripe fruit against the sweet, soft, oaky tannins. Comes close to giving a syrupy impression in the mouth, but doesn't quite cross that line (a line after which I would view a wine as flawed: I don't like wines that are overly syrupy). I'm strongly reminded of St. Cosme's Gigondas, but Ovid uses far more new oak, and for this reason, is not as good as St. Cosme at its best. My guess is that on the day they opened it, I would have scored this wine 90, or maybe 91.

Candied nuts and fruits. Similar to NOK, but more alcohol on the finish of Ovid. Intense vanilla on the finish. Very New World. Caymus-esque.
