(Avennia Syrah Arnaut Boushey Vineyard) Hello friends. We have perhaps the most difficult-to-source wine from Avennia’s lineup today (in limited supply), along with a bonus just-released rosé:Avennia has moved from rising star to vaguely culty to established superstar in a very short time. And a wine like Arnaut shows why. In cool vintages (2010 and 2011), in a down-the-middle vintage (2012), in riper vintages (2013, 2014, 2015), it has impressed every single time. I tasted this current release and thought to myself: is there anyone in Washington making a more evocative rendition of Boushey Syrah? Seems like Jeb agrees: Jeb Dunnuck: Copyrighted material withheld. What more do I really need to say here? Probably not much, considering this is always among the most limited/allocated of Avennia’s releases. We pre-purchased our parcel, and I hope it’s enough to avoid any serious rending of garments, because it’s all we’re gonna get. It comes from two of Boushey’s oldest blocks: the 1994-planted Grand Cote (oldhead Washingtonians may remember some splendid old McCrea bottlings from Boushey Grand Cote) and the 1996 Factory Road Block (Betz and Efeste source from this block as well). It dazzles with its mix of purple fruits and violets and smoky bacon fat. It has noteworthy concentration (14.9% listed alc) but retains a sense of elegance and grace intrinsic to Chris Peterson’s winemaking. As I mentioned above, I see this as a contender for the finest version of Boushey Syrah produced in the state, and since Boushey is one of the finest vineyards in the state for Syrah, that’s saying something.
