  • On the aroma, tobacco, leather, rum, vanilla, caramelized cherry and old bookshop. A very long finish, with a strong flavour of caramelized steak, basil, very soft tannins and cranberries.love this producer and the wine, probably opened too early, really interested to see how Thiel's evolves over the next 10 years as I have quite a few😃

  • Retrospective note. In a very good place. Blind this looks very European with its barnyardy stink. Thoroughly enjoyed. Enjoyable now, will be interested to see if the barnyard or fruit wins in the end. Drink now or take a punt longer. Very ‘funky’ for an Australian wine.

  • Angelica wine club - Sommelier matching (Strand Cellars, Croydon): Served blind.
Toasty black cherry, a little clay and almost brioche, sweet spcie, slightly ashy notes and a little earth and meat backing this. In the mouth it's big, bold and rich with a fair amount of breadth and alcohol warmther here as well. a little talx textured grip on the mid palate and a lick of cedar.
I guessed NZ, Central Otago, Pinot Noir, 2015

  • Some will love this..some won't. I bought this as a big fan of Shiraz Viognier and the previous vintage of this was written up really well. Opened this with friends after a 2010 Scotchmans Hill Cornelius Pinot. Imagine my horror to get the Pinot stink (brett yeast? I'm not sure what you call it). Now my Pinot buddy across the table quite liked it...so this is a shiraz for the pinot-files.
I'm a rare beast amongst my friends that I cant get over the stink and it's ruined a few great Burgundy tastings. The shiraz notes were there and the mouth feel benefitted from the Viognier.
I've also had it once or twice with Cote du Rhone too.

Colour. Deep density dark ruby purple edges bright and clear almost translucent 15/15
Nose intense fragrant nose pure red and blue fruits
, spicy Asian star anise vanilla, ginger , lifted florals violet from the Viognier component, hint of confectionery , pastille , beautifully cool climate Shiraz nose 29/30

Overall love the purity of this and all the Serrat wines, this is much bigger than previous vintages one can only imagine how well this will develop over the years 10/11
