Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): PJ mentions that Juge picked the earliest and always shows a hint of green/pyrazine and he is spot on. Expressive nose displaying generous black fruit, blackberry, licorice, black cherry, white pepper, tapenade, petrol, garrigue and mineral. The green/pyrazine note is quite evident as the front note. Very good concentration, generous black fruit, rich and oily yet also beautifully detailed, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long ripe black fruit driven finish with tapenade at the end. Justin mentions the green note is like Clos Rougeard and I agree. This is a fascinating wine that combines the unripe expression of Loire Cab France and the full-bodied ripe expression of Cornas.

This feels like a wonderfully delicate extraction of Syrah - the olive note is quite pronounced, but it feels very well integrated at this age and is apparent why this is so well loved/in demand. This feels like one of those eye opening bottles which could change how you feel about Syrah - it still has some of those iconic flavor profiles, but a lot less spice/black pepper than what you might typically associate with this varietal.

Super Bowl LVIII 2024 (Alpharetta, GA): Tasted double blind: Big wine with a powerful nose of spices, roasted meats, pepper, and black olive. Clearly of the Syrah varietal. This took third place by the group. I really liked it, but did not vote it in my top 3 because there were other wines that I felt were drinking more in their sweet spot. This will be amazing in about 5 more years in bottle.

Dave B Visits Albany, Day 2 (Salil's, Albany, NY): [Pop and pour.] Spicy red fruit nose. Quite mature. Mulch, spice, olives. Not that appealing to me. Maybe it was just that I should have had this before the Penfolds 707.

Rieslingfan visits Albany; 1/26/2024-1/27/2024 (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany): Loved this; old school Cornas flavors on the nose and palate with an array of gentle red fruit, green olives, savoury meaty and gamey notes, and a dusty earthiness that becomes more prevalent with air. But while the flavours are very Cornas, the palate is much lighter and gentler than I'd expect from Cornas at this age, silky with gentle, fine grained tannin and most of the structure coming from the bright acids. Delightful wine - glad I have one more, though I will likely not wait that much longer to open it as I love where this wine is right now.
