  • Follow the Red Brick Road (DDF)

Following the red brick road (I can’t use yellow as red wine is, well, red), my vaca buddies (my daughter and her fiancé) and I have come upon a mighty wine as we count down to the next to last wine.

Napa Valley, now into its fourth year of drought, is starting to feel the effects. While some have placed 2015 above its predecessor, most considered it another “tick” below 2014 and a couple of “ticks” below 2013.

Somehow, that variance has little to do with today’s wine:

Staglin Family Vineyard "Estate" Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Still in control by the Staglin Family, Shari and Garen bought the winery in 1985, and is still run by family members. Along with their winemaker Fredrik Johansson and their certified organic vineyards under the watchful eye of David Abreu, this blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, is then aged for 20 months in 100% French Oak, 92% which is new. Across the board, this wine had now become our favorite of the bunch, at least so far.

The wine never relented; bold fruit of cassis with dark and lush blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed in, even the tannins acquiesced and brought both structure and yet a certain silkiness. Rustic elements comingled bringing this wine to a fully satisfying and long finish with wonderful spice notes to complete the experience. Spectacular was all I could utter at the time.

This wasn’t my first Staglin. Almost 8 years ago, having squandered away a bottle of 2003, I decided to open that one for my birthday. Memories came rushing back as I recalled the wine from that previous encounter. That time I waited over 10 years before drinking, this time, call it 6 or 7. Either way, it was tough to wait but worth every excruciating minute.

One more wine to go and I’m thinking maybe it’s the “save the best for last” type of situation. Stay tuned.

    Cheers

  • I'm not sure how to rate this, but it was delicious. Lighter color than some heavy hitter Napa Cabs. Beautiful dark fruit, some spice, and a very long finish. This is classy stuff, and definitely not over-the-top. Drink now, or over the next 5 years.

  • This truly needs about 2 hours before it shows its best. Excellent after that. Bright, lively and rich. An excellent wine!

  • Took some decanting to open it up but such a beautiful wine and great with a steak dinner.
