  • Dense red black fruits and definite black pepper nose…
Good complex wine…hitting Rhône notes but light on tapenade and nothing on bacon fat..
    Excellent length and balance…

  • About half a bottle by Coravin.
Dense, almost viscous, deep purple still, but the blackness of before is giving way to a very deep red.
Syrah notes more evident than last time, on nose and palate. Good with roast sirloin on the bone served medium rare. Blood and iron....
This is still a very big wine, but more typicity of St Joseph than before. A couple of bottles left plus the half of this.
Son and daughter preferred the CndP served after it and I can see why as it was a bit more approachable albeit 5 years older. I was slightly more with this one.

  • Stood upright for a couple of hours to allow sediment to settle before decanting.

Dense purple black. Some tannins still evident. Chewy and intense. Dark fruit with slight burnt caramel note too....a little overextracted?

Drunk with venison steak, mushrooms and beetroot, which needed a robust red and got it. Finished the bottle with steak the following night....a little smoother and less demanding, touch of oxidation too maybe?

Will be interesting to see if this mellows a bit in a year or so. Quite demanding.

  • Another big beast from the Northern Rhone. Be warned, you have to let it stand for a few hours then decant, as there is a lot of ‘floaty’ flakes of fine sediment in it. Once this settles, the colour is deep purplish black. I noticed a big difference in clarity of it between the first decant and then decanting the remains back into the bottle later on.

Anyway, did I say this was a big beast? However, it’s a good one. Doesn’t have the ‘feral’ gamy note of some N Rhone, more black fruits and hints of violet. Not as rustic in the way of some St Joseph either. Says 14.5% on the label, it isn’t less than that for sure! Despite its heft, I’m not sure it’s a hugely long keeper, as there isn’t the acidity/tannin frame for that. Very enjoyable drinking now though and for the next three or four years.

EDIT: To note that on day 2, the tannins were much more in evidence, and fruit had fallen away a bit. Which makes me review my opinion a bit....I think it might be better in a year or two, and it was better on day 1 than day 2. Tannins really sticking to my teeth now.....
