  • Light to medium ruby red. Smoked nose with black cherries, bramble berries and black tea. Medium acidity (6/10) and medium body. A bit of minerality on the palate, ripe red berries, spiced herbs and rhubarb. Looking finish. Drink now.

  • A single-vineyard Tinta Barroca, fruit sourced from a plot planted in 1974 in Malmesbury. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, aged for a year in concrete tanks. 13% alcohol, 2,1 g/l residual sugar, 5,7 g/l acidity and pH 3,47. Total production 7320 bottles. Double-decanted and left to breathe for 4 hours.

Somewhat youthful and moderately translucent dark cherry color. Fragrant, sweet-toned and somewhat sauvage nose with seductive aromas of brambly black raspberries, some perfumed notes of violets, light black cherry tones, a little bit of jammy boysenberries, a hint of ripe apple and a subtle touch of bretty funk. The wine is ripe, moderately full-bodied and relatively mellow on the palate with slightly sauvage flavors of sweet raspberries, some ripe black cherries, light bretty notes of leather and farmhouse funk, a little bit of gamey meat and a hint of beetroot. The medium-plus acidity keeps the balance quite well, while the firm medium tannins lend some welcome grip to the wine, keeping it quite nicely structured. The finish is ripe, moderately grippy and subtly funky with flavors of gamey meat, wizened black cherries, some raspberry jam tones, a little bit of leathery brett funk, light sanguine notes of blood and a hint of brambly boysenberry.

A wine that feels like it is made like a classic, old world wine, but its overall character speaks more of the sunny climates of the new world. The wine shows quite a bit of ripeness and sweet-toned fruit, but fortunately it packs enough structure to keep it well together. Although the nose is just gorgeous with its wild, fragrant overall character, the fruit feels perhaps a bit too straightforward, making the wine come across rather linear and lacking in depth - the subtly funky notes of brett bring in only some welcome rustic complexity, but even they are not enough to take the wine to the next level. This is very good and enjoyable, but it lacks the intensity, depth and sense of focus that the best Sadie wines exhibit. Hopefully the wine will gain some complexity with age.

  • Youthful purple red colour. The nose has a distinct fresh lifted, fridge cold fruit: Pride of India cherries, black plum, and raspberry. there is a little wild scrub and savoury twist with coolness on the nose. the
the palate delivers a cleansing acidity, with good concentration yet not
quite the wealth of fruit that it initially suggests so revealing a
fairly stiff leathery tannin that adheres to the mouth suggesting it needs
plenty more time in bottle to resolve. The finish is long with a distinct mineral and spicy (star anise) twist

  • 100% Tinta Barroca from a vineyard planted in 1974. 13% alcohol.

Moderately translucent raspberry red color. Sweet-toned and slightly sauvage nose with aromas of stewed strawberries, some raspberry jam, a little bit of sweet exotic spices and a savory hint of leathery funk. The wine is full-bodied, ripe and somewhat sweet-toned with flavors of brambly raspberries, some cooked red fruits, a little bit of leathery funk, light spicy tones and a hint of beet. Wonderfully high in acidity with firm and noticeably grippy yet not aggressive tannins. The finish is long, grippy and gently funky with flavors of raspberries, some cooked strawberries, a little bit of beet root, light floral bretty tones and a hint of animal funk.

A wonderfully fresh, balanced and slightly funky little red wine made in a very classic old world style. Although the wine might not be particularly complex - at least this young - it is exactly how I'd want my new world wines: not too polished, not too soft and brimming with character. The wine might not be particularly distinctive for now, but I can imagine it will get more depth and complexity with cellaring, since it feels like it is really built to age. Recommended.
