NOSE: typical MSR; developing aged character; moderate petrol.

BODY: med.-rich golden yellow color; full bodied; bottle was a leaker.

TASTE: moderately aged character; 9.5% alc. not noticeable; medium+ acidity; light for an Auslese, but certainly not lacking flavor; possibly a touch of botrytis (if not merely a spicy aged note); hints of incense, wet wool, raspberry(!), and yams. Aging nicely, and drinking well now, but can continue to rest in the cellar if one prefers fully mature sweet Riesling. Gut impression score: low 90s.

  • Liked this a great deal; loads of big exotic fruit but deftlly balanced and very fresh. Another great 2005 Auslese and at just over $20 a ridiculous bargain.

  • Revisiting 2005 Mosel Rieslings (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Slighter fuller yellow. The deepest pitched fruit of the bunch with cherry (yes, cherry) tones, like smelling a red wine if you closed your eyes. Off dry (less sweet than a few of the lower Pradikat wines) with some higher inner mouth aromatics, strong core of concentrated, tangy black cherry fruit that leads into a bitter finish. This is not harmonious, and the finish is frankly poor as a result.

  • Straw color. Concentrated nose of honey, melon, orange blossom, stone, and petrol. Viscous and dense on the palate with sweet peach and honeydew. Candied green apple finishes things off along with excellent stony minerality. Long finish. Great balance. Should age quite well. Excellent all around.

  • Nice nose of pineapple, white flowers, and slate. Full bodied on the palate, with white peaches, pineapple, and golden currants. Something of a velvet glove; seems light and refreshing up front, but then spreads over the palate with impressive heft for a Mosel. It seems as if the alcohol is higher than the 9.5% listed, but that is not a bad thing; this is auslese after all. A long, mouth-cleansing finish shows a deft balance of acidity. Would work great with grilled seafood, but also delicious without, and I can't see how this won't get even better. You would be hard pressed to find a better 2005 auslese at this price point. And the importer, Terry Theise, has said that 2005 Mosels are the best German wines he has ever been associated with.
