  • In my cellar from 2014. Had pulled this for another dinner and wound up leaving in the fridge a month ago. Charlotte made a roasted pork loin and potatoes...seemed a good time to open this one. Chilled, PnP, drank over 45 minutes

Medium gold/brass color. Nose showing white flower, saline, mild petrol. Deep and expressive palate of baked apple, apricot, marmalade. Persists through the mid-palate adding honey and mineral. Medium/full body (Riesling scale...), long finish.

This was incredible showing on this evening. Wasn't sure what to expect, my first experience with this vintner. A real wow wine, old school Riesling, layered and nuanced, incredible energy and depth at 20 years in. Probably could go another 20+? This is an example of why it pays to age Rieslings. Sadly, my only bottle...may be looking for more...:)

PS - I paid $45 for this bottle at auction in 2014...insane QPR

NOSE: expressive; light to medium-light petrol; classic, lightly-aged Riesling aromas.

BODY: dazzling orange marmalade color; full bodied.

TASTE: gently sweet for an Auslese; smooth; dried apricots and orange marmalade dominate; hint of honey; mineral note on the finish; well put together; embedded acidity; well-balanced; excellent. Not yet at peak.

  • This is classic, old-school Auslese in a light, drinkable style that's basically impossible to find these days. It has the richness and intensity of Auslese, but there's a sense of understatement and lightness here, a savouriness on the palate that makes it an Auslese to drink with dinner rather than after dinner, and it has all the brightness, depth, and perfect balance that I'd expect from a 2001 Mosel Riesling. Absolutely brilliant wine and I am so happy I have another case of it.

  • #04-02, 8% abv. A fairly sedate nose, with a very light hint of petrol and some really lovely herbal elements, as well as a slight saline tone. The palate is quite understated, with a slight earthy element that acts as a counterweight to the sweetness, which while present, isn't overbearing. Beneath all of this is an undercurrent of acidity that gives this freshness and lift. It's not a wine that's loud or pronounced in any way, but rather one that is very balanced and quiet. Super delicious.

  • Last night was the best bottle of this wine I have ever tasted, and I have has a lot of this wine and this vintage. It was captivating. Still possessing lots of youthful fruit, it also had a subtle creamy edge. What really set it apart, and put it right up as one of the greatest Rieslings in my recent memory, was the endless depth of flavor. There was no way to touch the bottom. I kept tasting, and there was always more flavor, more aroma, more substance that remained. I felt as though I wasn’t ready for this wine. It was beyond comprehension. The 105 (at the time) year old, ungrafted vines knew too much. They had seen too much, and learned too much to transmit through one bottle of wine.

Bottles of course vary, but this one indicated that this vintage could be immortal.

    Just stunning.

(Schmitt-Wagner Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Auslese) ($71.00) Just five cases here. It’s rich and classic, still by no means so sweet as to preclude savory dishes; developing ideally. Reminds us why the vintage was deemed a classic.
