  • The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry jam, raisin, oak and violet. It tastes like cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, apple blossom and tea. The body is medium/full. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

  • Still big and rich, with strong vanilla notes present after it opens up. Velvety soft tannins, fruit and structure fading, but still enjoyable.

  • Not every vintage of Phantom seems to age with equal grace, and I've been disappointed by holding on to a few too long (though it's a low $ disappointment). The 2014 seems to have aged well, with the heat and sharp angles having mellowed, but with nice dark fruits still in abundance. I returned to the half-drunk bottle two nights after opening and its was still quite good, so I expect this could age for some time to come.

  • Considerably mellowed, rounded, blended and integrated. Oak has become more subdued, and the tannins rounder and yes, there is a vanilla presence, though tucked under the alcohol. Still strong dark fruit on the front and happy grape on the finish. Lost some minerality that it had when younger.

  • It’s been really interesting to see how these age (and as of tonight, there are still 600+ remaining in people’s cellars!). My last bottle was in Nov 2019, at which time I thought it was still a bit angular. That’s not a problem any more. It’s still a big, bold wine, but with velvety smooth, fine-grained tannins and noticeable vanilla (probably from the oak). Fruit is fading a bit, but still present. Secondary characteristics are not yet ascendant. Quite pleasant and easy to drink, with just a bit bite of alcohol (it is 14.5%, after all).

I’ve got 2 more left, and I’ll probably drink them sooner rather than later, although this could still age for another couple of years.
