  • If you scooped one of these bottles ex-chateau, ignore all of the notes saying this is over the hill. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This wine is 24 years-young. Raspberry, blueberry, shoe leather, orange peel, brown sugar, all under the aromatic veil of a dank basement or wine cellar.

On the palate, complex and enduring notes of red currant, licorice, smoked meats, even a hint of watermelon--not like you just took a bite of one, but the lingering taste after eating a slice. The acidity is almost New World (in that it does not overpower, but provides enough life to keep the wine from being flabby).

Tannins still tough! Your tongue will feel like you licked a tea bag after a glass or two. Worth it.

  • Leather oak smokey tobacco earthy. Dark berries, very dark, dried even. Medium bodied with silky fine tannins. A little light little flat. Might be due to age. Long fine finish, a little note of rubber at the end? Got worse over the hours, drink out of bottle, no need to decant.

  • The line up: 06 Clarendon hills hickenbothen cab, 07 Clarendon hills hickenbothen syrah, 2010 pommard sebastian magnien, 2011 don Melchor cab, 1999 fontanafredda lazzarito, 07 Paolo conterno ginestra reserva, 04 ciabot berton roggeri reserva from mag. While not on the top of anyone's list, this was very well liked. Took some time to open up but it was a solid wine that was not over the hill.i think it could last at least another 5 years.

(Lazzarito FONTANAFREDDA Barolo) Piedmont Dear Friends, We continue in Piedmont this weekend with two crazy deals on aged wine from the environs of Alba - both are quite stunning for the level they are playing in and both can be enjoyed now. I'm putting this out on a weekend (Halloween no less) as I must be possessed by all the spooky goblins that frequented my door yesterday - that's the only way the prices below make any sense. Fear not, this is no specter in the night...this is real: 2001 Malvira Roero Superiore "Mombeltramo" (this price is not a misprint) Malvira's 2001 Roero Superiore wines disappeared from the US in a flash back in 2003 and they've been very difficult to find on the open market since then. This perfectly cellared parcel vies for "Are you kidding me?" price with several of the other top tariffs we've had of late. In a nutshell, this is Malvira's best wine that would run circles around many examples of single vineyard Barbaresco as well as some well-regarded Baroli from the vintage. With all the hubbub over Roero in the current Antonio Galloni testimonial, this wine introduces the aromatic and classic style of the region with a minimal investment. The 2001 Mombeltramo is at or near peak from a great vintage for Nebbiolo - it is ready to drink now and there is no long-term cellaring or differed investment required (although, it will continue to improve with a few years slumber as well). When I think that many examples of Barbera are now $25 or more, it puts into perspective how good of a deal this is: 1999 Fontanafredda Barolo Lazzarito Not a lot to say here - this is Fontanafredda's best wine in a top vintage and it's $48+. It is also ageing beautifully with many more years of complex evolution ahead. There are so many generic Baroli floating around at the $50 level that this true wine of breed and character stands out like a sore thumb. A Borolo of depth and grace that lingers on the palate for nearly 60 seconds. An absolute steal of a price (it would be at $70): Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy7148 Italy7149
