Final bottle. Complete nose, a classical expression of its Margaux terroir and the 1988 vintage, with lovely nuance, and both lift and depth; well-balanced palate that retains its freshness and poise, lithe and elegant, showing age without too many wrinkles; the finish is gravelly and dusty, with a hint of cold tea and vestiges of fruit, light but with good length. Holds up well in the bottle over more than half a day.

Pristine bottle. Showing well this time: slender but not austere, gravelly but not too dusty, bright red fruit shows no signs of oxidation, retains its mineral freshness and balance. Old-fashioned claret.

Absolutely delicious. There's been plenty of bottle variation in this case, so I was somewhat trepidatious to open this bottle, but it rewarded aplenty with copious aromas of Margaux pencil shavings, cigar box and forest fruits - hardly dusty at all. The taste was similarly a point, with fine tannins, complex layers of fruit and vegetables, with a lasting finish. Only one more bottle to go now.

This wine displays some bottle variation, but this specimen is once again a nice blend of Margaux charm (flowers, small red berries) and dusty 1988-minerality.

MWS Wine Tasting and Dinner (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): Displays the typical gravelly 1988 profile, austere but no lack of charm, hint of oxidation, fully mature, good depth, a bit foursquare, mineral, good intensity and length.
