  • Dark purple, perhaps with a little age at the rim. Definitely Shiraz on the nose with blackberry/blueberry. Very soft on the palate, with a hint of tobacco but strong dark fruits. Tannins appear very balanced with a lovely finish and great length. A really lovely, great value wine.

  • Nothing special. Good value. Balanced yet bold. Spicy and smooth enough. The 2017 is already far better.

  • Taste Thanksgiving Holiday Wines (San Diego Wine Co.): "Best’s Old Clone Shiraz, from the Salvation Hills Vyd in the subregion of Great Western @ Rhymney, is grown in granite sub soils with red clay loam & granite/quartz gravels on vines dating back to the 1970s." Typically, "A small portion of whole bunch ferment in tank, then aging in old FR oak of various sizes up to 2,600 L for 14 mos." 1,200 cases imported.

N: Slightly closed; Smoke atop RIPE berries

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in contact with the init frt as it fairly seamlessly works its way into a LONG, BALANCED finish with an enticing bitter/tangy/SWT trialectic to the FAIRLY unoffensive, firming, dusty tannins. Approachable now with (hearty?) food, but DESERVES through '20, then drinking through '24? 14.5% ABV; My EXC-/EXC, the higher arguably for QPR. 94 pts Suckling (& 1 of his 100 Best < $30 for '18), 93 The Wine Front (Mattinson), 92 WA, 90 WE (8/1/19 @ $25), & 88 WS. [This vendor's $19.99 puts it in the top quartile of wine-searcher's listings.]

  • Top notch Vic Shiraz. Will improve over the next decade. Excellent QPR.

  • An austere, somewhat tasteless wine. No blackberries, certainly no sweetness; maybe a touch of black olives and a little warmth from the alcohol (a market standard 14.5%). I think Best's Great Western could have sat on this for a couple of years in the hope that some fruit emerges. And I don't know what Halliday was tasting when he gave it a 95.
