Joy's 44th (Our house): Magnum. Actually not as exciting as a 750ml a few months ago, although hard to tell how much due to format and how much setting (that was a more contemplative dinner with nerdier company). Still, the wine remains approachable yet with excellent acidity and structure, saline and with attractive pastille-like fruit.

A complete wine with a sense of fine balance. Concentrated black cherry, black olive, violets. smoke. Dry but not drying - it feels a little clenched right now with lots of potential to unfurl and become more expressive.

Monday night Syrah (Hawksmoor Borough): Decanted for around 30 minutes. I was curious as to how a 7yo Hermitage from a classic vintage would show, and the answer turned out to be: beautifully. Strongly reminiscent of tapenade, with bass notes of cassis, and a cool, relaxed, grown-up feel. Drier and earthier than the two new world wines we had, too. Will age, and probably improve a bit, but very glad to have tried it at this stage.

Meaty nose upon decanting. Very sexy showing. Thyme and violets on the palate. Sweet violet finish. Balanced fruit. Couldn't have asked for more for my first bottle of Hermitage. Very very good bottle.

So, this is incredible. I'll be buying at least one more tomorrow to forget about in the wine fridge for however long, as surely it will continue to develop. It's fruity without being chewy, bright acidity without being ripping, and soft, chalky tannin that will surely keep integrating and only getting more supple. On the nose it's got a mix of black and red fruit, along with some dried violet, juniper, baking spices and chocolate. The palate explodes with these flavors and more, the chocolate comes through quite a bit, along with that classic black pepper, charred wood, wet earth, and just the faintest **hint** of mushroom/game. A really wonderful showing.
