French v.s. Italian Wine Night (Extra Space): Appearance is clear, deep intensity, dark garnet colour. Initial nose was a bit of musky animal, but soon developed into what everybody unanimously agreed was a pronounced truffle aroma. The truffle dominates all the way to the back of the nose and onto the palate. On the palate, medium acidity, very smooth mouth-coating tannins just slightly drying on the back palate, full body, long finish. Flavours of truffle as mentioned, with underlying dark fruits with a bit of sour cherry. To me, a very balanced nice mouth-feel. After 2 hours of air in the bottle, the truffle notes diminish a little, and the underlying Bordeaux blend character comes up. Charcoal, blackcurrant, and a "Graves" feel. Very complex wine. Was worried that this would be too old, but this proved me wrong. Drinking well, but I think don't hold on for too long. I know that my personal score seems to be on the high side, but I really appreciate the truffle nose and the complexity on this SuperTuscan that has made it to grand old age of 28 years. Cheers. >85% Cabernet, with Sangiovese and ?maybe a bit of Merlot.

Keith's Blind Challenge 2013 (The Square, London): Quite a ripe Graves nose. Mid to full garnet. 78? Quite dry and grippy tannins. Elegant and interesting but you have to work at it a little. ***1/2

Not sure how well the bottle was kept. Levels were good and so was the cork, but with aged italian wine we have had many bad expiriences. Bordeaux-esque on the nose, well secondary, light earth but still with dark fruits. Has seen much better days for sure and nowhere close to the the superb 88 & 90 sammarco's. Drink now. 90
In general a great wine to look out for from the late 90s past. CdRampolla later one split the production into the high cuvee Alceo and Sammarco but the sammarco always performs very well and this year outscored everything (incl masseto) in Antonio Galloni's Tuscany report
