Dense, dense, dense. Hint of diesel and herbs on the nose, peaking through the stone fruit. On the palate, it's definitely auslese level of sweet, whipped cream, very ripe stone fruit, white flowers. Plenty of acid to stand up to the sweet. Really super auslese.

  • AP 07 18 (Spatlese) and AP 09 18 (GK Auslese). I love getting a chance to do side-by-side tastings of new wine and occasionally it makes sense to review them in the same note because they are such obvious siblings and the notes make more sense in that context.

The similarities: Holy hell the 2017 vintage is beautiful! For the few producers I've tried so far, it seems to be a fantastic combination of somewhat botrytis-infected ripeness (more so than 2015), acidity (less so than 2015), and sheer concentration (more like 2006). Oliver Haag absolutely nailed this vintage and I found them to be even more drinkable right out of the gate than 2015. Maybe it's the slightly lower acidity this year, but his wines exhibit a creamy suppleness that makes them immediately approachable.

The differences: The Goldkapsule Auslese tastes and behaves exactly like you'd imagine the Spatlese to be if you distilled it by 25%. The acidity remains the same and the fruit - instead of becoming overpowering - seems to become more focused and compact. The Spatlese is an extroverted playmate who gets along nicely with food, whereas the Auslese is a bit of an introvert that it's better getting to know one-on-one. Both, however, are fabulous!

    Spatlese - 94+
    GK Auslese - 97

  • [09 18] Tasted after the non-GK Auslese. Rich and packed, wonderful concentration of fruit, notes of honey, spices, flowers. Not quite as vibrant and weightless as the non Goldcap version, but of course still wonderfully balanced with a nice mineral backbone and very impressive length. 94-95+

  • Mosel Trip 2018; 5/10/2018-5/11/2018 (Mosel Region): AP09‎.
Doesn't have the spicy heat of the Juffer GK. More balanced. Deceptively simple (in a good way). Buy.
