  • Animal, tar, and florals on the nose. Medium-full body, medium- gravely mouth-coating tannin, medium+ acid. Rustic. Very good.

  • My WOTN. Premier cru level Burgundian in weight and texture, with higher than average acidity and riveting complexity. Picked up notes of green peppercorn, sumac, pomegranate, red plums and cactus pear. Exciting; best version of the mission grape I've ever tasted. No wonder the padres dragged this grape all over the planet.

  • The name stands for "Midlands". The wine is a blend of Listán Negro (55%), Vijariego Negro (30%) and Tintilla (15%). Fermented spontaneously in concrete vats (Listán Negro and Tintilla) and plastic fermenters (Vijariego). Aged for 12 months in old, neutral oak barrels of 228 and 500 liters. 14% alcohol, 5,17 g/l acidity, pH 3,55.

Dark and moderately translucent ruby red color. Very dusty, savory and non-fruity nose with aromas of stone dust, flint smoke, some herbal green tones, a little bit of Cabernet Franc-ish vegetal character, a hint of peppery spice and a sweet, aromatic hint of red fruits. The wine is moderately full-bodied, concentrated and dense on the palate with rather chewy mouthfeel and complex flavors of raw meaty tones, crushed peppercorns, some inky character, a little bit of smoke and dry forest floor, hints of crunchy dark berries like crowberries and black raspberries and a touch of leafy vegetal character. The wine is rather textural and tightly-knit with its high acidity and moderately ample, firm and pretty grippy tannins. The finish is long, savory and meaty with flavors of ripe dark forest fruits, some stony mineral bitterness, a little bit of smoke, hints of succulent dark plums and a touch of roasted - almost charred - gamey character. Overall the aftertaste feels positively robust and angular, but not overwhelmingly aggressive.

A very impressive, broad-shouldered and thoroughly delicious Canary Islands red that isn't much about fruit, yet isn't a lean and understated AFWE wine either. There's quite a bit of heft and substance here and a nice undercurrent of ripeness, yet the fruit department is very restrained and the emphasis is on the complex array of non-fruit flavors. Although very youthful now, at under 4 yeras of age, the wine is pretty darn tasty and impressive. However, I have no doubts that this wine couldn't turn into something even more impressive once it starts to age and develop some tertiary characteristics. Definitely among the best Canary Islands wines I've had, ridiculous value at 15,21€.
