  • Another outstanding example of Gattinara.

  • My first bottle of the 2009 Vallana Gattinara in 4.5 years, this was served over three nights and was wonderful. On the first night it ws decanted and aerated one hour before dinner; on night two it was aerated and served immediatly; and on night three it was poured and served immediately. It was great on nights one (more aromatic) and two (heftier), but less interesting on night three. Classic Nebbiolo aromas and flavors, typical Alto Piemonte wine with medium-light body, firm structure, slightly translucent color, aromatic complexity, and only 13% alcohol. Remarkable complexity for a wine at this price point, with red and dark fruits, flowers, spices, earth. Savory and sappy, a great food wine, and a great QPR. Drink to 2030.

  • Color: Brick red with some red reflexes.
Nose: Forest floor, black cherry, marzipan, tobacco box, violet and a hint of glue.
Palate: nicely balanced, maraschino cherry, forest floor, dark forest berries.
Very nice. Gattinara is our favorite pairing for Pasta e Fagioli.

  • Equal or somewhat better than the bottle we had in 2020. Really developing into a richer wine as time goes by.

  • Popped this bottle spur of the moment - decanted and consumed right away over the course of 3 hours in a Grassl Cru. DIAM 5 cork was in good shape. Took about 30 minutes to an hour to really get going. Slightly rustic with lots of Nebbiolo character. Quite full with a lot of cherry fruit. This still drinks very young to me with a lot of mouth drying tannin in the back end. No way I would have pegged it at 13 years old if blinded. I think it will be better in 5-10-20 more years if the cork holds. Still got a lot of pleasure out of it today.
