This is perhaps THE classic Spanna from Alto Piemonte. If you want to see what the region is all about, try this wine.
We decanted it for an hour or so. Cranberry, tea, anise, tarragon on the nose. Like most of Vallana's offerings, the palate is more primary than the nose with black cherry, cranberry and black pepper flavors. Medium body, absolutely ripping medium + acid and medium + tannin that manage to be powdery without being soft.
I love how this is a world away from both the typical American over-extracted, high alcohol, over oaked wines AND the "glou glou" natty wines that seem to be everywhere now. It is seriously about as far away from either style as something could possibly be. It definitely needs food. We paired it with the region's great bean and vegetable soup, minestone novarese.
These can obviously age forever (CT says until 2050!) but you know what? I really like where this is right now. If you have a few, it's absolutely worth opening one.
Opened by mistake, I was reaching for the 2006 ! After my first bottle in October of '20 my intention was to save these until the '25-35 window. And this bottle confirmed that timeline. See previous notes for details.

This is my first bottle of the 2010 Vallana Gattinara. Decanted for four hours before serving, it was extremely restrained. Much better 24 hours later, with aromas of cherries, leather, and mint; a medium+ body, very firm acid and tannin structure, 13* alcohol. It has a firm, sappy finish. It’s a very nice wine, but a long way from the 94-95 that I rated te 2006 and some of the others that Vallana has produced over the years. I suspect that this will evolve amd improve a lot for another 20 years, and I will keep my others for the 2025-2040 window. Excellent QPR.
