{cork, 14%} Bright crimson red. Medium intensity, ripe and fairly primary nose of raspberries and liquorice. Fruit rather than oak. The palate is medium-bodied, chewy with grape pulp qualities although with only really low/medium tannins, all seemingly grape-derived. Medium acidity, raspberry flavours, hint of chocolate, but perhaps a bit dilute on the palate; it blossoms then fades quickly, and the finish is short/medium at best, although dry. In that awkward zone of seeming to be a concentrated wine but then not quite following through on the palate. The DOC is not that familiar to me and the producer is quite unknown; it may well age happily but development is optimistic I suspect.

Quite meaty to begin with. As it draws in air there are [purple flower florals. It is very savoury with a suggestion of black cherry fruit mixing it up with all of the earthy things. The finish is fresh and crunchy.

Visit to Cascina Fontana (Perno, near Monforte d’Alba): Again, bottled only one month ago. A pure bouquet of blackberries, dark cherries and other black fruit, graphite, earth and menthol. Like the Dolcetto, a little closed. More body and drive than the Dolcetto. Attractive, racy acidity, “Open, not cloying dark fruit”, said Andrew. A decent Barbera d’Alba. I’m sure it’d cellar 10+ years, easily, but I’d hold it 2+ years minimum.

A simple and straightforward wine - roses and some baking spice and brown sugar on the nose, with a palate of jammy black fruits of medium body.

Rich and heady nose on opening. Narrow and tart on the palate though. Much better with 30 mins air and some food. Very decent indeed though not cheap.
