Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 97 pts. in 14 notes)

Tasted by georgeohr on 10/22/2009 & rated 70 points: Bottle was not flawed. Deep color and body. Awful unbalanced flavors. Prune, turpentine, alcohol. Became hotter as it spent tinme in the decanter. Those previous reviews which apologetically suggest "maybe a flawed bottle", etc. are right on target in describing this wine. We left the balance of the bottle. (368 views)
Tasted by gorm on 9/12/2008 & rated 96 points: Uncorked DK tastes Châteauneuf 2006 and Henri Bonneau (Premisse): Dark red with slightly brown hints. Very intense almost port like nose with a slightly oxidized feel, mature cherries. Impressive mouthfeel, intense and long.

Tasted by Anonymous on 5/30/2008: Four French Wines with Legendary Reputations (Washington, D.C.): Medium ruby with minimal lightening at the edges. Lots of VA on the nose (Amarone-like?) along with prune, fig, and spice. I was surprised that the wine was not more syrupy and overwhelming on the palate given the superripe nose. It was "merely" very large scaled but not overtly hot or heavy. All of the Port-like fruit described above was accompanied by a deep note of dark chocolate and some shape provided by buried, round tannins, so the palate and flavors are not devoid of interest. If you crave idiosyncratic, this is the wine for you. Definitely not my favorite style, and I honestly can't see the balance improving with further cellaring since the volatile component can only become more prominent. (884 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 11/13/2007: Not sure what to make of this one. It smelled like a bowl of ultra ripe prunes ... with vodka. The palate was okay but it showed more like a Zin. Maybe flawed? (1364 views)
Tasted by Tubbs on 9/23/2007 & rated 97 points: Gorgeous, absolutely stunning. (1564 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 6/3/2007: Tasting Group Dinner w/ Paul Jaouen (Brad's House, Minneapolis): Strong VA on the nose. Smells and tastes like exactly like a Port. There seems to be some interesting over-ripe cherry fruit lurking underneath the VA. A strange example of this wine, and I'm pretty sure this wasn't a representative bottle. Judgment reserved.  Tasted by Icarus on 6/3/2007: Paul Jaouen Does Minneapolis (Mugnier, Leroy, Papet, La Las, Pavillon, Celestins, Cheval, Latour, Palmer): I had been looking forward to trying this for a long time, and what a disappointment. Decanted about three hours before serving. When first opened there was no nose at all. When served, the nose was dominated by a smell reminiscent of an overdone vintage port. I couldn't discern anything I would characterize as Rhone-like, and what was there was not pleasant. In the mouth this was full bodied with tons of concentrated fruit, tons of structure, and a surprisingly big kick from the tannins. Tasted smooth despite its massiveness. I really have trouble understanding how this can come together in the bottle and live up to the lofty expectations. If I don't sell my remaining bottles, I'll wait, say, 10 to 20 years before trying it again. (1800 views)
Tasted by Topper on 8/12/2006 & rated 100 points: Quite possibly the best red wine I have tasted. In fact, at a tasting of 20 years of Celestins, this vintage came in first by a large margin, even over the 1990. Huge but delicious with primary notes of blackberry on top of smoke, tar and a thousand other flavors. This is the one we all kept coming back to. If you can afford it, try to find it. You could drink it now or keep it for decades. (3206 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 7/12/2006 flawed bottle: Vieux Telegraphe Dinner with Henri Brunier's daughter Catherine (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): I was really looking forward to trying this wine. How disappointing. No character whatsoever. I personally thought it was heat damaged but was assured of its provenance. Nonetheless a big thank you to our generous host Jock for supplying this wine.  Tasted by Eric on 2/18/2006: Legends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with Leve (Los Angeles, CA): Big and bloody. Loads of structure, some raisin. Wow! This is insane, and I LOVE it! This is like Amarone of Grenache. Simply AMAZING structure. (3517 views)
Tasted by Russell Faulkner on 12/17/2005 flawed bottle: Bonneau Tasting (Graz, Austria): Corked (3039 views)
Tasted by KPB on 7/15/2005 & rated 98 points: 1998 Celestines. A unique wine, not typical of CnDP. Inky black-ruby. Intense nose of walnuts, dried fruits -- sour cherries or plums, kirsch, leather, licorice. A significant surmaturite – at the edge of seeming slightly cooked. Phenomenally complex in the mouth with layers and layers of extremely sweet fruit; almost port-like. Coats the palate; very fine tannins. High alcohol, but it holds it well. A wine almost unrelated to the others we tasted; unapproachable right now – don’t even think of opening a bottle in less than 10-12 years. 98-100 with time… but if you open a bottle now, you’ll hate it.
