  • This wine has become a mid-week staple. Each bottle is impressive & it is getting better...the secondary notes are deepening.

Certainly, this is not your wimpy, flat Merlot... like so many 'mainstream' versions.

Easily make 2023...with time to spare.

  • On the young side yet. Tight, but with promise.

  • The BC Wines 2016 Vintage Report called 2016 a great year in the Okanagan Valley, with a hot spring and a long growing season. Quails' Gate reported being able to pick their grapes 7-10 days earlier than they had in the past. In a country where no vineyard is exempt from the possibility of an early winter, it appears 2016 let the winemaker, and not Mother Nature, determine how ripe the grapes would be at harvest.

This wine was deep ruby right to the rim. It had pronounced aromas of black cherry and plum. I picked up a slight green aroma, which seems to contradict the Vintage Report and wasn't apparent on the palate so I won't attribute it to ripeness.

On the palate were pronounced flavours of cherry and sour cherry. It was dry with medium acidity, medium-minus tannins, and medium-minus alcohol. The body was bold and the finish was long. As one might expect of a Merlot, I would sum this up as smooth. It would go well in or with a stew on a cold day but was completely drinkable on its own. I'm eager to get to Westbank next summer to pick up some of Quails' Gate's higher end wines.

  • The 2016 growing season was good, warm and without the heat spikes of 2015. A softer palate, due in part to winemaking technique rather than climatic differences. Smooth, rich and full bodied with notes of black currant, black cherry, bell pepper and cocoa. Pair with lamb and other fine cuts of red meat, or firm cheeses such as local aged cheddar. Decant for an hour or two prior to serving.

    From winery listing.
