Tasted in a line of of Valli 2017s, the Bannockburn was predictably the most finesse-filled, with its ethereal bouquet a particular strength of the wine. Fragrant, lifted, herbal, with undergrowth and transparent cherry notes. The mouth was structured and balanced. Filled with nuance, this is a great expression of the 2017 vintage.

2019 Visit to Cromwell (Central Otago, NZ): Three hectares of vines, Dijon and Pommard clones, predominantly 10/5 clone, planted in 2001. What Jen described as “cool site in a warm region”. The hill usually protects from frost. The vineyard is in Bannockburn, but Valli typically finishes picking two weeks later than Felton Road. This vintage, four picks. Yield 3.9 tonnes per ha. Whole bunch 25%, new oak 27%. A fairly red fruited bouquet with dry brushwood and earth. Similar on palate. Earthy and powerful, “the power in the tannins”, said Jen. Spherical and smooth on the palate. “A little silkier than normal”, said Jen. 3/4.

Decanted 1 hr and then drank over 2hrs. Magnificent complexed nose .. perfectly drinking from the start. Started to wane at the end on the palate..so not sure about longevity.

A slightly ruddy, ruby hue here; dark ripe fruits, quite heady, some savoury character as well, possibly from the oak; better on the palate, some whole bunch savoury and spice character to the fruit, complexity and interest. Nice weight. A very good Otago PN. Refreshing acidity on the finish.

Decanted and drank over 2.5 hrs. In the zone with palate softening at the end. Suggest open and pour and drink now
