Hospice du Rhone; 5/3/2007-5/6/2007 (Paso Robles, CA): Blend of 30% syrah, 26% tempranillo, 17% mourvedre, 13% grenache, 10% cinsault, 4% viognier. Nose of bright red fruits, with a bit of alcohol, and some milk chocolate. On the palate, very nice, tich, thick, slightly syrupy but still balanced. Nice chocolate, dark fruits, and a touch of woodsiness. Somewhat acidic and rannic. Needs time and will improve, but a bit too sweet.

HDR seminars, Day One (Paso): Minerally and kind of dirty. Thick texture, as if there were pieces of the wine that were solid. Tannic. Without question distinct, but that's not too helpful for me as I didn't find it enjoyable. Low 80's.

This was the most attractive and interesting wine of the night. Nose was complex, offering fresh flowers, some spice and red fruits reminiscent of a lighter style Chateauneuf du Pape. Medium bodied, elegant with a hot stone note in the finish and decent, albeit not overwhelming concentration. The acidity here is also very obvious but at much more tolerable levels. My WOTN in an otherwise dissapointing wine night that was more than compensated by the incredible food our generous host offered.
