  • "Over the hill and through the woods" brings to mind the festive, Christmas spirit, but this bottle only follows the first part of that lyric. It is definitely over the hill.
This 2015 Zaca Mesa Syrah -which we bought at the winery a few years ago- was somewhat sour upon first pour. That dissipated well enough after an hour decanting for it to be drunk with food, but what little fruit came through was stewed and the savory, soy sauce notes were in abundance.
It was out of balance and past prime, but that is all my fault. I should have stored it better and drunk it earlier.

  • Notes from second day open. Very dark ruby color with lightly stained legs, clear and no sediment. Profound nose of cherry/berry, gravel, bright herbs, and light (relative) alcohol. The palate leads with the greener notes before the fruit Koolaid sweetness kicks in with well-integrated oak. Simple, medium length finish. Very different to the 2017 Andrew Murray that preceded it, which was an oak and umami monster. This almost comes across like whole cluster or cool climate with stronger tannins. I guess it's fair to say that the Santa Ynez appellation cannot be pigeonholed, other than neither of these two wines were all that great. 5+11+14+6= 86
