  • Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2015-09; Classical Italian wines (By HV and FB): The bouquet is very mature with coffee, celery, lovage, caramel and some fennel. On the palate also mainly tertiary flavors. Chocolate, coffee, butterscotch, cinnamon, autumn forest floor and some barnyard. Mild acidity and soft tannin. Good length. There was a lot of deposit in this bottle. I have the impression this bottle was close to the end of its life, but with Barolo’s of this type, you never know. I scored it 90 for tonight.

  • Decanted for about 2 hours prior to the Easter dinner (lamb). The wine started relatively tight and mute but after some time in the glass it started to open up, and became very enjoyable. A classic Barolo in the beginning of its drinking window. Maybe just slightly short on fruit but very nice indeed. The only downside is the 80+ euro price tag.

  • This was a wine that definitely improved with some air, making me regret not decanting it. First taste was not altogether impressive and if I had to rate it in the first five minutes, it would have scored in the mid 80s. The acidity overwhelmed even the tannins and the fruit was just too soft. However after about 30 minutes the wine came together. Still not a blowout wine though, and it reinforces my opinion that - generally speaking - the 2000 vintage was quite over-hyped. Nice notes of earthiness, leather, cedar and subtle red fruit closed it out. Definitely a wine for at least 10+ more years in my opinion.

  • This was opened for Easter dinner (lamb) with a Borgogno Barolo ('2000). I can't say I was impressed with either wine. The Pio was a bit more palatable than the Borgogno but both were highly tannic, barely any fruit and not very substantial on the palate or the nose. The family has always enjoyed different wines at holiday meals and this was probably the least favorite pairing I can recall. Disappointing as I had high hopes for both, esp. the Pio.
