  • Red purple fruit with a brambly undertone. Not very complex with a lacking of balance. A bit disappointing.

  • I’m a big fan of Les Carmes HB, but this wine was really disappointing. Glossy, generic, short bitter finish, with no real Graves character that I could pick up. It did seem young, and possibly could improve with some age. But I don’t think I’ll be buying anymore, and it’s not a good value at $35 a bottle.

  • This wine doesn't justify at all the hype about Les Carmes Haut Brion. A thin, as it seems (nose, palate) merlot-dominated second wine, in no way comparable with modern second wines as for example "Le Marquis de Calon Ségur", "Les Pagodes de Cos" or "La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou". Drinkable, but not more. In the aftertaste more and more like a modest Pinot Noir du Valais.
Second day: a strange herbal green and mentholic touch. Cabernet Franc?

  • Tasted after the 2017 Le C. More Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend in this vintage. Again fresh and pure, but riper, less herbal, quite glossy. Quite generous with ripe tannins. Polished and long. 91-92+

  • At the Wine Society Carmes Haut-Brion tutored tasting. This is a separate wine from Les Carmes Haut-Brion and not a second wine. The vineyards are at a different location between Haut Bailly and Smith Haut Lafitte. The cepage is also completely different being 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 1% petit Verdot; whereas the main Chateau has Cabernet Franc as its principal grape. To increase complexity and reduce the alcohol level (13.6%) there is some whole bunch fermentation and no second wine. The wine is only released when approaching maturity hence the 2015 vintage has not yet been released. The aim is to have balance, complexity and relatively early drinkability.
Darker and more tannic than the 2017. A good nose which starts with the same earthiness yet with more anise later. Not quite as well balanced although this will come with age as I think the wine is still a year or two too young. Medium bodied with a longer finish. At £21 in bond this is good value.
