  • Hmmm… This 2017 Fiddletown Cellars Zinfandel Old Vine has a bit of hot and cold to it. I liked it and then when I thought of similar wines I thought it didn’t hit the high bar. It’s a good wine and after finishing the bottle I’m still trying to decide if it was very good or simply good. I wish I had more, so another bottle is in my future for sure. Several notes worth sharing to help and determine if this wine deserves a spot in the rotation. First, Fiddletown Cellars is in the middle of nowhere and it is a small winery operation in Fiddletown, CA—about 50 miles east of Sacramento. Grapes come from select growers. Second, I’m not a big Zinfandel wine drinker, but have been converted with the Klinker Brick Zinfandel Old Ghost, and Seghesio, and the best from Martinelli. Third, I drank this wine with a great dinner: roasted cauliflower, butternut squash, fingerling potatoes, red onions with fresh herbs; and with pan seared lake perch with red onions, olives, and capers—awesome! Finally, a few notes for this Fiddletown Cellars Zinfandel. It is fruit forward as you would expect with ripe raspberry and blackberry. The fruit is definitely front and center, and some French oak along with vanilla brings needed balance. Writing these notes makes me give this wine a very good 88 rating. I like it and just wanted to like it more. Easy buy for about $20 and creditable enough for another bottle.

  • Nose of black fruit, briar, and allspice, same on the palate, tasty, medium body, fruit forward, ripe, juicy fruit, simple, medium/long finish. $14 retail means decent QPR. Uploaded photo.
