Northern Rhone WIMPS (La Trompette, Chiswick): Intense, slightly closed nose, ripe blackcurrant. More open on the palate which is medium/full, blackcurrant fruit, firm but fine tannins, fresh accidity, slightly constrained, grippy finish. Should improve.

Northern Rhone WIMPS #163 6th April 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): Nose stars with an uncooked venison steak with some blackcurrant and white flowers. Palate pleasantly spicy and red fruited, fine and young. Opens out with some air but will definitely improve over the next 5 years.

The standard St. Joseph has become a real favourite of mine, the 17 vintage is open and enjoyable right now. It is a no frills, yeoman's St. Jo. This is a "better" wine, more concentration and depth with some of the rougher edges smoothed off by the extra time in wood. Having said that I don't think I enjoyed it more - it's fairly closed right now although showing ripe red cherry/raspberry fruit with a prickly acidity that livens it up. This needs time and may improve, but I think I'd buy 2 bottles of the VV instead. ***
