  • Tasted at Summa 2023 (Margreid, South Tyrol). Not included in last years vertical tasting at Summa 2022 I was very happy to try the 2016 this time, as it turned out to be even better than the 2013, which was my favourite of last year. Like this vintage the 2016 is more red- than blackfruited, however, it is more powerful IIRC and overall its intensity, freshness and tannic structure are downright explosive. Add the aromatic complexity of the variety with its stemmy notes à la Cabernet Franc and you have a wine, which came out first among stiff competition like La Mondotte 2015 and Monteverro 2016. I rarely buy wines in this price-range but in this case I had to.

  • One of the most intense espresso notes I've ever encountered in a wine. This has many diverse and intense dark and roasted aromas and flavors. Graphite and tar, cacao and espresso, blueberry, cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry... much of the focus is on earthy and roasted notes, but the fruit is very impressive as well. It reminds me of exceptional Pessac, but it is also rather like a very structured Pomerol. Super intense and gripping, it saturates every corner of the palate and lingers very long on complex earthy notes. Really interesting stuff, but I would not want to drink this without a big meal. It should improve for decades and hold in for another few decades after that. Would love to try a Caberlot with 10+ years on it.
