A bit disappointing given the premium price and how much I like the baseline bottling from Sanford. Plusses include a complex nose of herbs, red and black fruits, and tobacco, as well as a long and complex finish. Mid-sip it comes up short in the fruit department, with acid dominating. Disclaimer: tasted under somewhat difficult conditions and in two sessions separated by several days under vacuvin.

Popped - slow-oxed for 6 hours, consumed over 4 hours after. Appearance: Clear, medium ruby with just the slightest hint edge bricking or clouding. Nose: Medium+ intensity with developing aromas of black cherry, raspberry, sage, rose petal, and nutmeg. Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium tannin, medium+ intensity, medium body, 13.5% abv, with flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and nutmeg with a long finish. Overall an outstanding wine showing outstanding balance and length with very good complexity and intensity. This masquerades as a big wine with high volume fruit and noticeable oak (nutmeg), but it is really quite lean and precise - with perfectly ripe fruit with a nice acidic backbone for balance. Drinking well today with a good bit of air, better in 2-3 years.

Darker fruits than other SRH PNs - black cherries and black raspberries dominate here, with secondary notes of licorice, cinnamon, chive and garden herbs. There's a decent oak influence too that manifests as smoke and rubber flavors; and an interesting burnt toast thing going on. Medium + body with good tannin. This is for people who like their PN bigger and bolder.

Robust and big, with some tension, and right there but certainly not at $50.
