  • Third bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2011. Pristine condition, perfect level and cork. Not decanted, opened two hours in advance. It is an old maxim: "when a great year closes down, it closes down for a long time". And so it was with this 2005, but after 16 years it is finally emerging from its shell. The style is sturdy and structured of course - it is a 2005 from Prieur after all - but it does not seem over extracted and on the nose a certain fragrance and terroir expression is starting to emerge, with pure blue and black Pinot fruit and wet forest floor. On the palate the wine felt like a dusty and tannic, mature claret in 2017, but now the typical nervosité and silky elegance of Volnay are making themselves felt. Length is very good, even though the finish is not (yet?) very complex or expansive. It will be very interesting to watch how this fresh, energetic and well balanced wine develops over the next 20 years. We are still looking for complexity, but I am optimistic. Drink now - 2040+. Fascinatingly, it closes down again after about four hours. So no decanting!!

  • A private lunch with family and friends (at home): I like this better now than I did in 2017, this bottle is certainly very sturdy and structured, but it is less dusty and not as claret-like as the previous one. The tannic structure (more skin than oak) is still quite formidable, and aromatically it feels rather closed even after 14 years, but some (red cherry, red currant) fruit is starting to emerge and length is excellent. The mineral energy is undiminished and the wine feels very youthful - I don’t think that this will fade away any time soon. On the contrary, this may prove to be a real marathon runner. I have 10 bottles left to find out.

  • When asked whether he had ever confused a claret with a red Burgundy in a blind tasting, English wine legend Harry Waugh famously replied: "Not since lunch." This is a notion which is alien to many modern wine drinkers, as most good wines made in Burgundy today, couldn't possibly be confused with claret. This, however, is not one of them. Admittedly, the colour is lighter than a typical claret of this age would be, but the nose (with a hint of spicy, nutty evolution) has earthy and dusty notes which could easily be mistaken for claret, and it displays oaky notes without much Pinot Noir lift or fragrance. The palate is firmly structured, masculine and powerful, with considerable tannic grip, but it completely lacks the charm and delicacy which I associate with a Volnay Premier Cru. It also feels older than 12 years, even if there is a certain youthful brightness to the palate. Cold tea finish with some spice and vestiges of fruit, good length. Had someone presented this to me as a 1995 claret, I would not have called his bluff. Pristine bottle, first from a case, perfect cork and level. Decanted for two hours. Not my style, but it clearly has the weight and concentration for a long life, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

  • Dinner organized by Mark T - Generous group of wine enthusiasts, BYO evening, outstanding chef's tasting meal (Vic's Restaurant - New York City): This one brought by Mark T. Had been open for about 45 minutes prior to drinking. Drank post the Bonne Mares, but revisited over the course of a couple hours

Medium ruby color with some separation at the edges. Nose was bright red fruits with floral notes Elegant and smooth on the palate showing bright cherry, strawberry, spice, smoky minerals, some earth. Medium weight, long finish. Nicely balanced and integrated at this point.

This wine showed beautifully on this evening and continued to improve and show more nuance in the glass over a couple hours. WOTN for me among the Burgundies..
