Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 16 notes)

Tasted by Khamen on 1/26/2010 & rated 92 points: Short decant. Lots of fine sediment in here so advisable. Dense purple robe. Nose is awash with bright cherries, licorice and a little coconutty oak. A little attractive spice and that marzipan note pops out once again. Latex. Good complex nose, worth spending some time over. Meaty attack of soft but enormously ripe black fruit and a little balsamic. Great poise, balance and finesse for the size. More licorice and great minerality on the long and lush finish. Drinking very nicely now but will stand some age. Great winemaking

EDIT : +24 hours in decanter. An extra sweetness to the fruit on the attack, but countered by more noticeable alcohol on the slightly more tannic finish, at the expense of the minerality. Still good but this is a "drink-it-on-the-night" wine if decanted. Having said that no doubt that another 5 years in bottle will do no harm. Now - 2015+? (256 views)
Tasted by gorm on 1/22/2010 & rated 94 points: Delicious and overwhelming nose of sweet licorice, cool blueberries and show polish. Lush and big in mouth, bit nicely balanced. Made me realize that those Aussies aren't always as bad as I have led myself to believe. (326 views)
Tasted by Khamen on 10/3/2009 & rated 90 points: Just a 30 min decant here. Inky and dark. Nose is big, ripe and expressive with heaps of dark fruit and an unusual marzipan note. Good to see the oak isn't totally overblown - it's there but not OTT. Very extracted but showing a decently balanced attack of blackcurrants and charcoal smoke. Mid palate shows extra sweetness from the fruit and a bloom of vanilla oak, carrying through to a slightly tight finish flashing a little heat. This wine gives a much more convincing impression of "doing its own thing" than the likes of Two Hands' "garden" series, but they're out of a similar mould. Wil doubtless benefit from more time in bottle but tasty and delicious now. Excellent QPR (777 views)
Tasted by ewsb on 9/14/2009 & rated 92 points: I expected a heavy bodied Shiraz but found this to be medium bodied and almost delicate (in a very positive way). Straight from the bottle and (958 views)
Tasted by tgill on 9/7/2009: I loved it, my wife did not. Need to decant for 2 hours, and possibly let it sit for another year or so. (1018 views)

Tasted by cbbrown3 on 3/1/2009 & rated 93 points: Decanted 3 hours. Dark ruby color. Blackberry, cherry, raspberry, fresh flowers, licorice, and a bit of smoke on the nose. Fairly full body with ripe tannins and good acidity providing a very nice backbone. Loads of spicy, peppery, crushed berries, cherries, minerals, and licorice on the palate. Long, spicy finish that seems to go on forever, just slowly fading. Great wine that will reward some cellar time, but it tastes great now with some air in a decanter. (1535 views)

Tasted by mreinitz on 7/26/2008 & rated 92 points: Really enjoyable. Blackberry flavor dominates but also a streak of blueberry and some mineral flavors in the background. A somewhat compact wioe, I didn't think this was at all over the top for an Aussie shiraz. (1753 views)
Tasted by groper1234 on 7/18/2008 & rated 93 points: I was quite taken back with this one. Surprisingly fresh, quite restrained for barossa shiraz. Smell of wild berries, and plums, tastes really smooth and elegant and of course quite sweet. Somehow remainds me of blackberry jam. But I really like this type of wine. It's luxurious and stylish. Gonna get another bottle to re taste (1877 views)
Tasted by pgm on 7/13/2008 & rated 93 points: Consistent with previous vintages, with a core of blackberry, black currant, red cherry fruit, new leather, and charcoal on the nose. This also shows the saline streak I've found distinctive in vintages past. Nuances of flowers are there, too. In the mouth, it's very dense with fruit and game notes that carry through to the the finish, which is savory and verging on bitter at first, smoothing out into sweeter fruit notes that are what persists. Beautiful.

I've been looking forward to the '05 Struie for awhile now, and it didn't disappoint. Not quite as complete and broad as the '04, which is among my favorite Australian wines, but it has remarkable complexity along with its fundamental Australian purity, and it shows plenty of promise for development. 93-95.  Tasted by Seanr7 on 5/28/2008 & rated 90 points: Dark purple, nose is more reserved and more complex then most Aussi Shiraz, more of an old world Rhone style to it. On the palate this wine is layered with dark fruit and a bit smoky with a full mouth feel and a great finnish of 30 seconds. (2034 views)
Tasted by DJenkins on 5/8/2008 & rated 93 points: Much better than the last bottle. Lovely (2086 views)

Tasted by jdunnuck on 9/25/2007 & rated 96 points: Torbreck Tasting with David Powell (Table 6, Denver CO): Absolutely stunning with an almost cool climate fruit profile. Rich cassis and blackberry fruit aromas are backed up by toasty oak and subtle vanilla notes on the nose and the palate is full bodied with amazing precision, purity and length. Just a beautiful wine that is a joy to drink. (2923 views)
