  • Needed air... too oaky on opening.

Wow. Deep purple, the wine has an instantly appealing nose of sweet-spicy red raspberries (think of just-picked berries on a hot summer day...), maybe a hint of pecans and kirsch. Ripe but not at all overripe, the palate is flavorful and soft. Perhaps a tiny bit too much new oak on the finish: Grenache is easily overwhelmed by any sappy flavor, which is why Rayas is aged in 40-year old cases lined with a cement-like tartar accusation. But the issue is minor.

I was hoping this would be a ringer for Rayas, and it comes close. That spicy nose is irresistible. Absolutely delicious.
