  • A Wine Scorned

Maybe a bit melodramatic, but for the most part, true enough. You see today’s wine is an orphan. A red wine from the region of Condrieu in France. In case you didn’t know, Condrieu doesn’t allow red wine production, at least if you want to use that particular A.O.C.

The wine then becomes a part of the much larger region of Côtes-du-Rhône sometimes labeled as Collines Rhodaniennes. From a spirit of adventure, the Domaine Georges Vernay Winey, now run by Christine Vernay, the third generation to run the winery taking the reins in 1996, focuses on the terroir and not the rules, at least for this wine; there are others wine made that adhere to the appellation rules. For today, we’re looking at the

    Domaine Vernay Syrah Sainte-Agathe 2018

This 100% organically farmed Syrah originates around the city of Sainte Agathe (hence the name) from sloping hillsides and is handcrafted by Christine herself. Older oak aging for about a year is used helping to retain the fruit character of the wine.

Starting with blueberry and dark cherry on a dry and softer tannic frame the wine progresses to a nice long and spice-filled finish, softer styled but still with some oomph; this wine is on par with northern Rhone wines regardless of designation.

A handcrafted wine from an auspicious region of France should make you realize that this is not “a wine scored.”

    Cheers
