  • Sadly, musty and corked

  • Holidays 2021; 11/30/2021-1/2/2022 (Dogwood Grove, Arlington, VA): Grainy tannins, deep flavors and an impressive finish. Mineral-tinged black and blue fruits and baking spices on the palate with more of the same along with woodsmoke on the nose. Outperforms its price point and is a bottle I will seek out in future vintages. Best vino consumed during Christmas Week ski trip to Killington.

  • Perfumed red cran-cherry nose, powdered rocks, dried flowers, and very very pure. Palate takes an hour to open, but shows darker and more sultry than the nose, the common thread being the intense perfume and dried flowers. Decent acid, tactile minerals that give it the impression of backwardness, a twinge of savory herbs, and powdery tannins. Just a little flat in the mid-palate (which seems likely to fill out with 3-4 years sideways), but finishes strong. 91++

Day 2 sees more flesh in the mid-palate, in addition to the slightly riper Grenache phenolics that generally make me less enthused about the varietal. Still, excellent QPR and a great introduction to Sierra de Gredos, perhaps my favorite at the “entry level” compared to Bernabeleva and Comando G.

Day 4, it’s showing at its best. Still plenty of grip, and the fruit is fully in balance with the savory mineral elements. 92+

  • Pale ruby in color, suggesting it is as advertised - a higher altitude and therefore lighter Garnacha. On the nose is medium intensity, with young red fruit of redcurrant and red cherry. Is reminiscent (again as advertised) of a young Pinot. There are some herbs there - fennel and mint perhaps. That said it gets warmer in time and there are some secondary hints of vanilla and sweet tobacco and even a touch of smoke. On the palette has more of a classic Spanish intensity with lots of red fruits and some heat/alc. Has a nice balance: decent complexity and restrained depth on the nose. But palette remains a Spanish Garnacha, all-be-it a bit more restrained than normal. Was intrigued to try a new producer from this newly fashionable region (Robinson wine atlas calls out these foothills in a special side bar). Once again Spain impresses, on price and quality. And its organic to boot , and old vine focused. This is already punching above it weight; give it another few years and who knows.

  • Another stellar garnacha that breaks the mold! Sierra feel Gredos is growing serious mountain fruit from gnarly old bush vines that is simply astounding. Somewhere between typical sun-kissed, juicy Spanish garnacha and a classic Nebbiolo d’Alba, you’ll find this wine. Beautifully red-fruited, but lighter in color and body with a lean, mean frame, some gutsier tannins, and a tarry streak - this wine delivers an intense, food-friendly experience which, while slightly baffling at first, is rewarding on academic and hedonistic levels (and everything in between).

All this in a pop and pour for $20... Rodriguez has some pricier offerings with more choice cuvees, single vineyards, etc. Id be willing to bet they’re stunning.
