  • They say this wine is a different beast than the regular Caymus. I wholeheartedly agree. Not a fan of regular Caymus but this wine was quite enjoyable. Whether this is worth the price tag is debatable.

  • Very sweet, over extracted, high alcohol. So sweet that it actually paired well after I took a bite of my kid's strawberry popsicle. I understand why some people like this, but definitely not my taste. Maybe after some decent aging that excessively jammy fruit will subside. Not hopeful though. One of the worst QPRs in my cellar

  • Needed a solid hour of decant. What a complex wine. Cherry, milk chocolate, floral notes, bit of spice. Tannins are so integrated this drinks really smoothly.

  • But Is It Worth It?

There are few times that I have reviewed hundred-dollar bottles of wine, and fewer still, those $200 or higher. My greatest recollection is my wine from the post titled “A 200 Point Wine;” where I reviewed the 2012 Abreu Madrona Ranch Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, having paid $600 for the wine. As a reminder, this was the wine I opened on my 65th birthday, and only days away from my retirement. Two good reasons to pay such an exorbitant amount; you only live once.

Recently, I found myself at a wine event for a country club. I had been asked to assist and gladly did so; I love pouring at country clubs, the wine I pour is usually excellent, as was the case this time. All wines from the Wagner Family of Wines, but specifically the:

Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

There were other wines from this prestigious winery on my table, but I chose this one as it was the stand out of them all; naturally. Usually garnering $200 or so, puts this wine in the “fewer still” category of my reviews.

I’ve always found it difficult to review higher-priced wines. I recall from my early wine-pouring days, people asking if expensive wines were really worth the additional expense. Tough question to answer, except that I always said “Only you can decide that.”

Having taken a sip upon opening (an hour or so before the event), and again, once I was awaiting the guests to arrive, I was struck by the awesomeness of the wine. Deep rich and slightly savory fruit notes of blueberry and cassis are enveloped by tannins that enrich the wine but are yet supple. The long finish makes you yearn for more, but allows you to savor the previous taste.

This is an excellent wine and I do recommend it, but, as I said before, only you can know whether it is worth the price to be paid. Somehow, I feel that there are those out there that would do so.

    Cheers

  • This was sublime. The quality of fruit is just so good as it coats the palate within a beautifully structured frame. This is so good now but it will inevitably be even better in a few years time.

    My best experience with Caymus.
